Some of the questions discussed included: how do we develop appropriately sensitive language meant for recitation, to invoke the power of Buddhist practice? What is different when editing texts for practitioners? How shall we handle multilingual editions? What kinds of supplementary materials are needed? What kinds of musical genres can be implemented in liturgies and rituals?

Translating Sadhanas and Rituals https://conference.tsadra.org/session/translating-sadhanas-and-rituals/ Sun, 11 Mar 2018 14:05:23 +0000 http://conference-wp.tsadra.org/?post_type=session&p=14952 Discussing the translation of the genre of sadhana and ritual materials, presenters consider particular challenges and rewards. Stephen Gethin talks about accuracy and precision as they relate to sadhana readership and considers the demand for chantability of the ritual texts in English. Anne Klein follows this by considering the somatic and cognitive experience of practice, melody as transmission, and the possible trade-offs in the process. Larry Mermelstein speaks about specific choices in translation that elicit somatic experience during the practice of sadhana and ritual.
