Translation & Transmission

In recognition of the need for community and exchange, Tsadra Foundation and its partners develop meetings and conferences themed around the transmission of Tibetan Buddhism. The purpose of the Translation & Transmission Conference series is to provide an international forum for sustained dialogue and the sharing of ideas and experiences, as well as for collective reflection on the larger cultural and societal dimensions of the transmission of Tibetan Buddhism to the contemporary sphere. These conferences and meetings are not showcases for any single project or institution, but rather opportunities for all to gather in an open and collegial spirit to share knowledge and experience in the theatre of conversation and exchange.

These events are taking place at a critical juncture in the history of the transmission of Tibetan Buddhism in the West. The ever-growing quantity of material now translated, transmitted, and taught in the West, thanks to the effort of scholars and translators over the last forty years or more, has reached a point that makes a wide-ranging evaluation of the process involved not only possible, but essential. These conference events are a chance for us to reflect upon, as individuals and as a group, these important processes and relationships.

The Conference Steering Committee

The Steering Committee meets regularly in the years leading up to each conference, designing meetings that will be inclusive of all traditions and approaches to the translation and transmission of Tibetan Buddhism to the West. Comprised of international representatives from some of the most well-established translation groups and university programs, these master translators have more than 300 years of combined experience translating the Tibetan language. The committee itself represents the community building effort at the heart of the conference series.
